Productivity in the construction industry has been declining since 1968. It is difficult to accurately quantify and track productivity in the construction industry. The variable nature of our output and differences in delivery models, project teams, and levels of quality do not naturally lend themselves to a one-size-fits-all definition of productivity.
That said, the simple concept of output per work hour is not complex. A system of measuring the productivity of the construction industry is possible and has been performed by a handful of independent groups including the Center for Integrated Facility Engineering (CIFE) at Stanford.
The data reveals that over the past 50 years, labor productivity has increased in all non-farm US industries except for construction. Corroborating this conclusion, another study going back to 1998 concluded that the real value added per employee has increased over the same time frame for all US manufacturing industries, but has decreased over that same time frame for the construction industry.

ADVANCING DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION | The Charles Pankow Foundation stands alone as the only privately funded organization in the U.S. focused on funding research made available to the public domain to advance design and construction. It has funded more than 75 research grants totaling more than $15 million in direct investment, plus attracting another $3 million from several partners.
